Serap Kurtuluş
Born in Mersin in 1972, Serap Kurtuluş graduated from Hacettepe University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences with a degree in Biology in 1995. After a 17-year professional career, including managerial roles, she embarked on a new artistic journey in 2016, focusing on sculptures crafted from wire.
She is drawn to wire as a medium because of its ability to convey the transformative process from chaos to unity, from fragmentation to wholeness. The tension between simplicity and complexity, as well as the dynamic nature of wire, offers her a unique canvas to explore these themes. Kurtuluş describes her works as "sketches," emphasizing her spontaneous and intuitive approach. Her technique involves working directly with the wire without the use of molds or pre-existing forms.
In recent years, Kurtuluş has expanded her artistic vocabulary by combining ceramics and metal in her sculptures. She finds this juxtaposition of cold and warm, hard and soft, and fragile and sturdy to be a fascinating exploration of contrasting elements.
For Kurtuluş, the process of simplifying the complex and revealing the intricate within the simple is like staging a cause-and-effect relationship. Her work often delves into the complexities of existence, inviting viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of all things.
Since 2018, Kurtuluş has exhibited her work in both solo and group exhibitions. She continues to create figurative sculptures from wire in her Istanbul studio while also exploring the possibilities of ceramics.
